There are extensive studies and research done on the effects of mobile phone/devices due to the radiation or electromagnetic fields produced by the mobile phones. The International Agency for Research on Cancer have hinted at possible carcinogenic link in human beings and radiation – however WHO is expected to conduct a formal risk assessment by 2016 of all studied health outcomes from radiofrequency fields exposure.
As we see rapid adoption of mobile phone across the globe – the health effects of the mobile phone and any potential public health impact needs to be looked at more seriously. The exposure (operating at frequency levels of 450 and 2700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts) is seen only when the handset is turned on & has a direct correlation between the distance of the handset and body.
“Hence, if a person is 30-40 cm away from the hand set, for e.g. 1) by using hands free device 2) texting or accessing internet by keeping the device on a table go a long way in reducing the exposure to radiofrequency field when compared with someone holding the handset against the head or closer”
Although, there are large number of studies conducted – however, there is no conclusive link established between adverse health effects caused by mobile phones. The key point to be noted is that most of the studies have focused on “radiation exposure” while there is lack of long term studies focusing on the effects of mobile phone due to excessive texting, use of smart phones in wrong postures for longer duration, smart phone addiction issues leading to psycho-social problems such as stress, sleep disorders, depression, relationship issues with friends and family.
As part of the initiative to create awareness on the rising trend of mobile phones usage and its effect on health – Our Team of Physicians and Health Professionals from Activ Doctors Online INDIA (http://www.activdoctorsonline.in/) and Health Minds (http://www.healthminds.in/) are collaborating with academic and industry experts to study the ‘Effect of Mobile Phone Usage on your Health’.
We would love to hear your views and glad to invite collaboration/support from academic institutes, public health research professionals on the above topic – those interested to know more details – inbox me @email@example.com We would also request you to spare few minutes on the brief questionnaire below and your responses will be treated with utmost confidentiality and will NOT be used for any other purpose.
